Sneek, August 16, 2021
Alkaline water with a pH of 9.2 is used as an innovative method to combat toothache, root infection, pockets, and periodontitis at Ozontandzorg in Sneek. In cases of acute tooth root infection, it can be useful to non-invasively deacidify the root with alkaline drinking water before possibly using a dental drill to remove a cavity or root canal.

CDA Initiative Note
Shortcomings in regular dentistry for youth have led the CDA to draft an initiative note on oral care titled “A good start is half the battle” under the final editorial responsibility of Joba van den Berg dated June 30, 2021. This was discussed in the permanent committee for Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) on July 8, 2021. The committee requested a government response to the initiative note from the Minister dated July 13, 2021. (2021Z13625)

Letter to Minister
In response to the note, Jacob Brandsma from Ozontandzorg in Sneek sent a letter to the Minister for Medical Care Tamara van Ark dated August 12, 2021, referring to his earlier letter to the CDA parliamentary group dated July 12, 2021.

More Attention Needed for Disinfection
More focus should be given to non-restorative cavity treatment (NRCT) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) as the report rightly states. However, according to Brandsma, an overlooked problem is the lack of attention to disinfection — sterilizing the dentin matrix with tubular channels in the root, in other words the microbiome of dentules — with respect to assigning and compensating performance codes and thus practice revenues.

Alkaline Water
Complementary, non-conventional methods based on, for example, ozone from the product HealOzone and alkaline water from the product Water-revolution.com deserve attention to be recognized by politics and the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZA) to qualify for reimbursement. According to Brandsma of Ozontandzorg, creating space for such innovations within the reimbursement system is necessary to work towards a “cavity-free generation,” as the CDA commendably promotes in the oral care initiative note.
